Prof Phil Sizer - Physical Therapy Management of Persistent Pain – Empowering Clinician and Patient Success

Dr. Sizer is a President’s Distinguished Professor, Associate Dean for Research and Program Director in the Doctorate of Science Program in Physical Therapy at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX, USA. He serves as the Director of the Clinical Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory, as well as Senior Faculty in the PhD in Rehabilitation Science and Medical Pain Fellowship Programs at the same Institution, where he has been employed since 1990. He is a Senior Faculty Mentor in the Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program with the International Academy of Orthopaedic Medicine (IAOM-US) in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Sizer received a BS in Physical Therapy from UTMB-Galveston (1985), a well as his Masters in Education in Exercise Science (1993) and PhD that focused on Motor Control (2002) from Texas Tech University. His primary research interests include clinical pathoanatomy, sensorimotor control and functional biomechanics of the spine and extremities, clinical accuracy testing and clinical outcomes. Dr. Sizer has lectured nationally and internationally at over 400 courses and conferences in his specialty areas of musculoskeletal pathoanatomy, pathomechanics, diagnostics and management with an emphasis in manual therapy; sensorimotor control of the upper and lower quarters; and pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of pain. He was the recipient of the AAOMPT Freddy Kaltenborn “Teach I Must” Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. He has authored 94 peer-reviewed papers, 3 monographs, 36 abstracts and 24 editorial commentaries in refereed journals. He has co-authored 12 international books or book chapters, and 12 Educational DVDs. Dr. Sizer participated in 48 research platform presentations and 85 research poster presentations. He research-collaborates with Universidad del Desarollo (CZ), Marymount University (USA), Westmont College (USA), and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (CAN). At present, he is participating in 18 manuscripts and over 20 research projects in-progress. Dr. Sizer is a senior staff member with UMC Team Rehab in Lubbock TX, USA where he has maintained a routine clinical practice in outpatient orthopaedic PT services since 1985. He has served as a mentor / educator to over 70 Fellows in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and Medical Pain Management. He served as the co-chair of the International Affairs Committee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT), in addition to serving on the AAOMPT Fellowship challenge examination committee and Practice Standards Revision Subcommittee.  Dr. Sizer serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy and Pain Practice.
